Laundry Detergent Recipe

Seriously, I need to give this one a try. Courtesy Living On a Dime blog. Thanks!

Ingredients:

1 bar Fels-Naptha soap or Zote Soap

1 Cup Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda (this is different than Baking Soda, and comes in a large box)

1 Cup 40-Team Mule Borax (also comes in a large box)

Cheese Grater
**Optional- 1/2 Cup OxyClean Product-Must be in powder form**

The first thing that you need to do is grate up the fels-naptha soap with the fine side of the cheese grater. It will look like cheese. Don't taste! I like to put mine into the blender and process it a bit more, it then breaks down into little powdery grains.

Put soap into a dry container with a lid that you will store your detergent in. Then add remaining ingredients. Mix these together so that they are well combined. Use 1 tablespoon for small and medium-sized loads, and two tablespoons for large loads. I run hot water, add my soap, and when the soap is dissolved (a few seconds) I switch to cold water. I understand that you need to stop the machine before switching the water temperature to prolong the life of the transmission in your machine.

  1. ? Did you use all the soap in this recipe? I have seen some that only use like a cup so i just wanted to make sure how much you used. Thanks - Michelle

    1. I did use the bar, as per the recipe. I was not thrilled with the homemade soap, however, and have since switched back to store bought.
